Description

Vehicle Loading Crane training is a specialised training program designed to provide individuals with the necessary skills and knowledge to operate a vehicle loading crane safely. The training program is typically targeted at individuals who are involved in the transportation and logistics industry and are responsible for loading and unloading heavy goods onto vehicles.

This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to safely operate a vehicle loading crane with a Maximum Rated Capacity (MRC) of 10 metre tonnes or more.

This unit is nationally recognized and is required to be completed by individuals who wish to operate a vehicle loading crane with an MRC of 10 metre tonnes or more and apply for a High Risk Work Licence.

During the training program, participants will learn about the various types of vehicle loading cranes, their components and their functions. They will also learn about the safe operating procedures, including pre-operational checks, loading and unloading techniques, and risk assessments. The training program will also cover the relevant legislation and standards that apply to the operation of vehicle loading cranes.

At the end of the training program, participants will be required to complete a practical assessment, where they will demonstrate their ability to:

  • Safely operate a vehicle loading crane configured to its Rated Capacity (RC) of 10 metre tonnes or more to lift and move four different loads
  • Apply relevant communication signals from associated personnel
  • Apply relevant crane movements
  • Apply relevant mathematical calculations in conjunction with lift plan and load chart to determine radius requirements and relevant lifting gear to perform work/task to enable crane to be configured for load.
  • Complete pre-start checks to manufactures specifications
  • Carry out operational checks
  • Comply with Commonwealth, state and territory work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) legislation
  • Conduct and apply risk and hazard assessment strategies
  • Identify hazards and use appropriate risk controls and safety measures and equipment relevant to slinging loads
  • Safely use lifting gear, including flexible steel wire rope (FSWR) sling, synthetic sling, chain sling (including shortener), spreader bar or lifting beam, tag line, shackles and eyebolts, and using bends and hitches when slinging
  • Determine any defects or faults with operation of crane and reporting to relevant person/s

Upon successful completion of the unit, participants will receive a nationally recognized Statement of Attainment. Students will be able to apply for a High Risk Work Licence with the relevant state authority to operate a Vehicle Loading Crane with an MRC of 10 metre tonnes or more.
